Products
Blood Monitoring
I use a Precision Neo meter by Abbot. It’s not available on Amazon.ca, but is easily purchased at most pharmacies. Sometimes you can get the meter for free if you buy the test strips from the pharmacy at the same time. But for refills of the consumables, here’s the links:
Ketone test strips: The most expensive part of the process is buying these suckers. Use them sparingly…
The other required products, the blood sugar test strips and the lancets for the finger-poker (such a scientific term, eh) are not easily available on Amazon and are better purchased at a pharmacy. I use my PC Optimum points to my advantage at Shoppers Drug Mart (buy them on 20 x the points days) and redeem your points on Bonus Redemption Days – you can reduce the price for all of these items by about 30% with smart timing of purchases)
Kitchen
Having good kitchen tools makes food prep much more enjoyable. And cooking at home is a big part of LCHF/keto diet success. Batch cooking of larger quantities is a real time-saver, so some of these items are designed to hold more than a meal’s worth. Work smarter, not harder…
Instant Pot IP-DUO Plus60 Electric Pressure Cooker, 6 quart 9-in-1, Stainless Steel/Black Essential for easy bone broth making and cooking meat quickly and to tender deliciousness, even from frozen.
Be sure and use a stainless steel kettle for boiling water to avoid plastic exposure. One like this: Hamilton-Beach 40880C 1.7L Electric Kettle
You can store cold bone broth in plastic containers for freezing, but be sure and rewarm it in glass only. Plastic should never be microwaved. Safe glass storage containers: Anchor Round Glass Storage Set, 8-pc
Instant Pot Accu Slim Sous Vide Immersion Circulator Sous Vide cooks meats to perfection at low temperatures that are considered less harmful to the meat. An interesting variation on cooking animal products. Makes perfect poached eggs in the shell!
Silpat AE420295-07 Premium Non-Stick Silicone Baking Mat, Half Sheet Size, 11-5/8-Inch x 16-1/2-Inch Silicon baking mat, ideal for low carb baking – cookies, cloud breads, focaccia style keto bread.
Kirkland Signature Non Stick Parchment Paper, 2 Count Indispensible when roasting vegetables, making oven sweet potato fries, lining keto cake pans, anytime that you want to pan cook and not have to scrub the baking sheet.
ThermoPro TP01A Instant Read Digital Meat Thermometer with 5.35 Inch Long Probe Thermometer for Grilling BBQ Smoker Grill Oven Thermometer A meat thermometer for accurately and safely cooked meats.
A good quality stainless steel stock pot. For bone broth making.
Kitchen Mandolin – the ultimate low-tech but super efficient slicer-dicer. This is the very model that I have had for almost 30 years and still works perfectly. Rinses under hot water – no complicated cleaning. LOVE IT!! But be careful and use the safety handle. This baby is SHARP!! Ask me how I know…
The best chef’s knife that you can afford. It’s the basis of all your cooking prep and should make you very happy.
Another indispensable tool is a good pair of kitchen shears or scissors. Nothing better for cutting up chicken or opening seafood shells. I love these ones – they come apart for the most thorough cleaning, since you will be using them on raw meat.
A really good vegetable peeler. This is far and away my favourite style of peeler. I’m super fast with this type.
Groceries/Food Supplies
You will notice that there’s no links here to powders or pills, just real food. I haven’t yet found a powder or pill that’s really necessary, other than Vitamin D, easily available at any pharmacy or Walmart. Buy the type that you will consistently use – pills, drops or chewables (though these contain a small amount of sugar).
Yupik Macadamia Nuts (Pieces), 1Kg – Macadamia nuts are the highest in fat, lowest in carbs and absolutely delicious, but wickedly expensive. This is a very reasonable way to stock up. Keep refrigerated to keep them fresh.
La Tortilla Factory High Fibre Large Whole Wheat Tortillas, 8-Pack of Non-GMO Tortillas, 496gm – Wonderful tortilla wraps for when you miss bread. They contain non-GMO wheat gluten, so aren’t for everybody. Only 6g net carb per tortilla.
Cello Whisps Parmesan Cheese Crisp, 9.5 Ounce by Cello – Excellent cracker substitute made from 100% cheese. Very low carb, very crunchy. Buy the large bag if you are ordering – they are worth it!
Kirkland Signature Organic Roasted Sea Weed, 170 g – Another excellent snacking option.
